The counter tops and additional hand-built counter extension.
I painted the counter tops on the two kitchen pieces and on the wood piece for the extension with two coats of white acrylic paint. I used cocoa, light blue, pastel pink, and silver acrylic to make the speckles for the "Formica" tops. I topped it off with a coat of varnish.

For the extension, I used balsa wood. This is basically a temporary scene. For a permanent installation in a dollhouse or room box, I would use solid pine or maple. I was lucky to find acrylic craft paint the same shade of aqua as the spray paint I used on the body of the purchased kitchen.
